March Fundraiser - Razom For Ukraine
This month's fundraiser on Monday, March 7th will feature Razom for Ukraine, a nonprofit organization dedicated to forging a more democratic nation for Ukraine. Their current focus is on emergency response to provide life-saving medical supplies and humanitarian aid in response to the Russian invasion.
Razom for Ukraine was founded in 2014, born out of political unrest in Ukraine that led to a revolution and set up some of the conflicts that gave rise to the current war. Entirely volunteer-run to this day, the organization chose the name Razom, which means "together" in Ukrainian, as a reminder of the community that it takes to build a path towards a more prosperous and democratic country.
I spent two years living in Ukraine, teaching English as a Peace Corps volunteer just over a decade ago. While there is so much I could share about that experience (email me if you want to hear more!), what struck me the most about the Ukrainian people was their pride and loyalty to their country and to each other. Ukrainian peoples’ undeniable fierceness of spirit is being heroically demonstrated today.
The unprovoked, senseless attack we are witnessing on the Ukrainian people is showcasing the worst of humanity, but also the best of it. Ukrainians have exhibited unthinkable bravery and strength in the name of their freedom. Together, they are rising up as a nation to defend their sovereignty. I wish more than anything they didn't have to, but they are doing it without question.
Civilians are taking arms, volunteering to help their military, and even making varenyky (traditional Ukrainian pierogies) around the clock to feed their soldiers. And their leader is with them: when offered assistance to evacuate the country, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky replied, "The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride." Despite having a military that is a fraction of the size and power of their oppressor, Ukrainians are undeterred in their resistance.
I am struck by the solidarity and camaraderie of the Ukrainian people. I hope, if we can take anything away from this senseless war, it is how powerful a unified country can be. Ukraine has put up a stronger defense than anyone expected, Russia included. I am convinced that they've been able to do so because they are united in their desire to remain a sovereign nation.
100% of proceeds from Monday's treatments will be donated to Razom for Ukraine's emergency response to support those who need it the most. If you can’t make it in for a treatment on Monday, please consider donating directly to them on their website.
We hope that together, we can help safeguard Ukraine's independence so its citizens may continue to be free.
